Here is the story of how I ended up back at church. I was living out in the world and things were going ok. I had not been back to church for quite a few years and I did not see any reason to go back because I would just end up seeing things happening the way they have always been. I had a few ideas for things that could be done, but I realised that established churches tend to have a lot of inertia when it comes to new and different ideas and there is usually a resistance to change.
I woke up one morning as usual and everything seemed to be ok, but when I looked at my right foot it was swollen. I have had random minor illnesses before so I decided to try to ride this one out and head to work as usual. After a couple of days the swelling was a bit worse and I was starting to feel a bit ill as well. I decided to give the local doctor a visit and the first thing he thought it could be was edema, but tests of my heart found that it was ok. He tried some blood tests, but they did not come up with anything so it was decided that I should go to the Accident and Emergency unit a St Thomas’s Hospital along with a wad of papers that the doctor had given to me.
A&E is one depressing place with lots of unhappy people and I was glad I only had to face that torture once. When someone finally saw me they did the usual heart tests again, but it was still fine. I was seen by the first doctor and after I explained the symptoms she did the obligatory heart test and found it was still going strong. I explained that I was feeling a fever sometimes but she did not seem to be interested, and after the blood test results came back negative, she asked one of the white coated doctors to have a look. He asked me what seemed to be a standard set of questions and had a listen to my heart for the final time. The first day at the hospital was devoid of a result so they made an appointment for a scan of my legs.
Before the appointment at A&E I decided to have a look in the Bible for any incidents of physicians being confounded, because I noticed how puzzled the first doctor was about my condition, and to my surprise I found that one of the Kings of Israel also had a problem with his feet and he decided to rely totally on his physicians for a cure and in the end his feet were not too impressed with his choice. This certainly put a new perspective on my condition and I started to have this feeling that the doctors were not going to find anything.
Turned up for the leg scan and, what a surprise, the lady doing the scan was mystified because the scan showed that all the fluid passages in my leg were clear, but the foot was still swollen.
Well that did it for me, and I decided that I wasn’t going to join that Israeli King, so I canceled all the other appointments that they had for me and decided to leave it in the hands of the Lord. The illness did get a bit worse and I was having a problem eating, and it was at the height of the illness that I made the discovery that the the human brain also has a watchdog system that resets it if there is a conflict between to different processing centers. I also decided to handle this like any true bachelor and make sure that anyone else did not know how ill I was feeling.
Whenever I prayed I also avoided asking for the illness to be cured, because I had a feeling that I knew why the illness was happening, and I mainly asked for a solution to the problem of how to live in this world and then to be also able to do the Lords work properly and to keep the Ten Commandments properly as well.
After a week the swelling started to go down and the problem with eating food also went away, but two more interesting symptoms started to show up, but they would take a bit too long to describe, so I’ll have to leave them for another time. The main thing that this experience has taught me is that when it comes to knowing the human body the Lord is the undisputed champion, and the immune system comes in in second place because it knew that something was wrong, but it could not pinpoint what was up. The doctors of this world have to trail in in third place because they could not find anything even though it was obvious that something was wrong.
I am now baptised and back at church and even though the resistance to new ideas is still there, there seem to be some new and more enthusiastic people there now and this certainly makes things a lot easier than before. For a person who follows the bible this life is always going to be hard and for me any hardships that happen are just par for the course.
